Neurofeedback is a tool that assists individuals in learning self-regulation skills that improve their functioning.
Neurofeedback is a specialized type of Biofeedback. Biofeedback is the use of instrumentation to mirror physiological processes of which the individual is not normally aware and which may be brought under voluntary control. Neurofeedback monitors the brain activity of the user and displays this information back to the user. Once the user becomes aware of their own mental activity the goal of Neurofeedback is to then adjust and self-regulate that activity to achieve a more calm, focused mental state.
Neurofeedback training at a clinic is similar to exercising with a personal trainer at a gym, whether it be for self-improvement or rehabilitation. A trainer is an experienced and knowledgeable professional who prescribes exercise and instruction using specialized equipment to help you improve your performance as well as motivating clients by setting goals and providing feedback which is measured through regular assessments. In this case the excersises being peformed are mental rather than physical and the equipment is extremely sophisticated. But just as with exercise equipment, Neurofeedback equipment does not act alone. There are other ways of gaining control over ones mental states such as meditation, relaxation, martial arts, yoga and cognitive training however Neurofeedback is usually more rapid and efficient.
